Football At A Halt

For every footballer around the world, the best thing is playing games. Playing games brings that extra bit of determination and hunger, knowing that at the end of the 90 minutes, you win, lose or draw. Whether it's winning in a friendly, cup game, league game or a social game with friends, it always feel good to win. The constant willingness to perform in training and earn a spot in the starting eleven is a huge incentive. And when that game on the weekend is cancelled or postponed, due to the potential of numerous amounts factors, it can be very frustrating. For me personally, it has been over six months since I last played a competitive. The 2020 season for me is a huge one, the importance of not only playing but starting as many games as possible is key. And just like that, six months of endless work and 'grind' has come to a devastating halt. This halt being dealt to me by the coronavirus.

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus in European countries, football within Austria has been suspended until further notice. You see lots of controversy through social media and impacts it has on countries, cities and people's lives. But you don't fully understand the impact until it becomes a reality for yourself. Being three days out from the season and working endlessly to overcome my injury for it all to be stomped on puts a lot of mixed emotions in my mind. But it also gives me the
opportunity to ready myself even more for the season. To train harder, progress in my injury
prevention programme and have my body in optimal condition for when the virus passes and the season can start. And to continue on with the bad news, official team trainings have been suspended until further notice. This causes many issues for myself, the club and the rest of the footballing community. Not being able to train is a major setback, now having to individualise my training. I will continue to keep up match fitness by running each day, changing up the running style each day. Being that there is an unknown time limit on suspension of games and training it makes it hard to stay focused. But the most important thing around the virus in sport is to take precautions, stay healthy and make sure that when the suspension is lifted, I am ready to hit the ground running.

There has been much speculation around the coronavirus as to the magnitude of the virus. As a young inexperienced teenager living on the other side of the world from my family, it is hard to believe what is true and false being presented by the media. Austria is close to the Italian border, being only 500 kilometres apart. It allows the virus to spread very easily and enhance the chances of people transferring the virus from country to country such as Italy to Austria. Italy has been a country heavily involved in the existence of the coronavirus and the spread of it. The Italian government has been productive in taking the matters into their own hands, ordering shops, bars, and restaurants to close as the countries death toll has risen. This has caused the Austrian government to introduce more restrictions, such an university teaching being suspended, as well as indoor events involving more than 100 people and outdoor events with more than 500. Austria is hoping to decrease the amount of social contact in order for hospitals to be more prepared for potential cases occurring.

For almost every football fan around the world, big or small, it additionally hinders the chance to watch live football games. This can be a massive dent in the football community. A football teams fan base is massively influential for the support they bring to home and away games. When playing games at home, the advantage of having home support is compelling. The fans act as a 12th man to team, providing that extra bit of motivation to ensure their team can come away with a win. So for many huge european football teams having to be played behind closed doors can cause disruption and inconvenience for not only teams but fans of the footballing community.

It is hard to come to terms with the fact football is suspended for an unknown amount of time. All I want to be doing is playing football. But this situation provides no time to dwell. It is important for myself and the team to continue preparations and and keep match fitness at an optimal level for when the suspension is over and the season can go ahead. So until then, I keep working hard, staying fit and healthy and keeping my mindset focused. At the same time, it's important to think about the bigger picture, many people around the world have it worse. Families, communities, cities, countries are all being impacted in a major way. A worldwide pandemic has now been declared. In this time of crisis, we must all stick together and take the advice of the many health organisations and follow the procedures on day to day contact and social interactions.

For people around the world fearing for their lives, be positive. The worst thing around the situation is to not live in fear, it spreads faster than any virus. Be smart, be careful, be safe.

Frustration Of The Unknown

It's day 14 of the isolation here in Austria and each day brings that little bit more of negativity and excruciating pain of not being able to play the sport I live for. But not only am I living on false hope of my season occurring anytime soon, I am also living with the pain of not knowing if and when I can go home to my family.  It's difficult to be living in isolation without being surrounded by your family. Each day I wake up and fall into the same routine. Make breakfast, workout within the morning hours, make lunch, another workout in the afternoon and make dinner. Finding ways to waste the hours in the day is becoming harder and harder. That's what is making not being in isolation with my family even more difficult. I want to be spending time with my sisters, playing board games, biking around the property, swimming in the pool and enjoying their company which I haven't been able to do in years. Then being able to have special moments with my mum, playing black q...

Staying On Top Of Pandemic

Thousands of people around the world are being impacted by the coronavirus. Many world citizens in multiple countries are being restricted around their living conditions. The way they interact with one another, the distance allowed to travel and even the actions they take in and around their own communities. It is safe to say it is becoming a global phenomenon. Each country is following strict guidelines to insure their citizens, as well as the rest of the world, are safe and being protected in the best way possible to strengthen the chances of minimal spread. With thousands of cases already emerged, it is extremely important to stay safe, healthy and responsible in these difficult times. For myself in Austria, the restrictions are coming down like a ton of bricks. Within a 48 hour time period, multiple procedures were put in place to help counter the spread of the virus. These procedures meant no football training or games, no gym or workout sessions to take place and no access to a...
